Renji is a Hyuga clan member chosen by the clan elite as the protagonist’s rival for Hinata’s hand. He competes against the protagonist throughout Hiashi’s tests and repeatedly tries to provoke him, convinced that a Hyuga is the more suitable match for Hinata.
The two compete in the kunai, seal-search, chakra-control, and combat tests before Hiashi and the elders decide the result.
